An Innovative Modus Operandi Opted in 24 Carat International Gold Smuggling: SGRDJI, Airport, Amritsar

Chandigarh, PIB News: The alert officers of the Customs (Preventive) Commissionerate, Amritsar posted at SGRDJI, Airport at Amritsar on Thursday intercepted five paxes and on Friday intercepted one pax who, in a unique modus operandi was trying to smuggle gold concealed in the home appliances like iron, drill machines, juicer-mixer grinder, etc.

The passengers on Thursday arrived at SGRDJI, Airport, Amritsar from Dubai flight no. IX – 192 and one passenger on Friday arrived from flight no. G9275 of Air Arabia under the Vande Bharat Scheme.

Due to the heightened alert as a result of recent seizures of gold at different International Airports across India and the resulting inputs received from reliable sources, the alert staff during the targeted search & examination (including use of X-ray) of the baggage of the suspected passengers which included home appliances like iron, juicer-mixer grinder, drill machines, etc.(used to conceal the gold) the officers noticed some suspicious shades appearing to be orange –yellowish colored concealed in their check-in baggage. Further examination of the items of baggage and the said appliances revealed that gold was concealed inside the same.

All the passengers used the same modus operandi. The gold is of 24-carat purity.

The gold recovered from all the passengers weighs 10.22 Kgs having a present market value of approximately 05 crores Rupees. Mr. Dipak Kumar Gupta, Commissioner of Customs  Deptt. said, all the items have been seized under the provisions of the Customs Act, 1962. Further investigation is under progress.
