AWARENESS LECTURE ON INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY RIGHTS AND CONSUMER EDUCATION IN HOME SCIENCE COLLEGE

Chandigarh: In an endeavor to intensify the role of students as responsible consumers and a basic understanding of Intellectual Property Rights, Government Home Science College organized an awareness lecture on ‘Intellectual Property Rights and Consumer Education’ for the students of B.Sc. Home Science 3rd year.

Ex Justice Madhu P. Singh, Executive Member, Consumer Association, Mr. S.D. Singh, Chairman, and Mr. S. Virdi, Member, Consumer Association were the guest speakers for the day. Mrs. Madhu P. Singh elaborated on the Intellectual Property Rights as important drivers of growth and prosperity of a business that can turn out to be highly valuable assets of the business. She described the four types of Intellectual Property rights i.e. Trade Marks, Copyrights, Designs and Patents. She also discussed the importance of registration and protection of each property right further emphasizing its creation and statuary enactment. In addition to this, she emphasized on the necessity to conduct consumer education programs to raise the level of awareness and understanding of consumers. She also elaborated on basic Consumer Rights and Responsibilities and the salient features of the Consumer Protection Act 1986. She described the procedure of filing cases in the consumer courts in case of violation of consumer rights. She informed the students to be more conscious and cautious in selecting products and services with an assurance of quality, safety, and competitive price since they should not compromise the health, safety, and welfare of their family by patronizing products that are cheaper, but of low quality and substandard.

The principal of the college, Prof. Sudha Katyal, expressed her gratitude to the guest speakers of the day. She further motivated the students to be responsible and cautious consumers and generate awareness about the same to minimize the exploitation of consumers by unscrupulous traders and lessen the proliferation of uncertified and substandard products.
